Goldsmiths’ Fair Goes Online for 2020!

Category: rings

In light of this years challenges the annual jewellery event of the year has moved online to bring you the latest work from the UK’s top makers. Dates for Goldsmiths Online are 24th September – 6th October.

The new website launches on 24th September featuring this years selected makers. Disa is excited to be part of this years Goldsmiths’ Fair as it moves online for the first time in 38 years.

As part of reaching the Goldsmiths’ Fair audience online, Disa has created an exclusive video of herself in the workshop. She talks you through part of the process of creating her signature Spaghetti Rings while annealing the metal. This is a heating process that makes the metal more malleable. Watch her here and let us know what you think!

In addition to the designer-maker pages Goldsmiths’ Fair will be continuing with their popular Talks Programme. These include discussions around designers’ approaches to the making process as well as social and historical issues around Jewellery and Silversmithing.

Goldsmiths’ Online is set to be an exciting event and we hope you join us there! Disa will be available for all enquiries received over the two weeks. To register for free entry to the Online show follow this link.

With more of us spending time in our gardens and local outdoor spaces we take a look at some of the fruits of the garden and how they inspire Disa in her work. Summer time in Britain brings with it gluts of courgettes, juicy tomato harvests, and scented herbs galore! Beetroot and beans, potatoes and lettuces, all can be dug up, plucked and picked for our culinary delight!

If you’re a jeweller however, it’s not just the taste that appeals. The shine on a ripe red tomato will instantly remind you of rich cabouchon garnets and rubies. The aroma of crushed mint mixed in to a homegrown potato salad will nudge you in to sourcing tourmalines. Making a garden salad can inspire a whole collection!

Like many others Disa has turned to her garden for calm and reassurance through an uncertain time. Finally the work is starting to pay off! We caught her inspecting her crops while the infamous Molo the dalmation watches on.

Molo has more interesting things to investigate as Disa checks on her tomatoes.
It’s difficult not to make the connection between the greens of the unripe tomatoes and these tourmalines…
This bunch are on the turn, becoming riper by the day. The intense yellows are starting to come through as they warm to that rich tomato red we all recognise.
This yellow tourmaline has a distinct lime hue just like the ripening tomatoes!
Mint Tourmaline 18k Gold Ring – good enough to eat!
Peridot and Green Tourmaline 18k Gold Cluster Ring – Below: Garnet and Pink Tourmaline Cluster Ring
It’s not just the colours that can inspire either. Look at these Cluster Rings – remind you of anything?
We’ve had just the right conditions this year in the UK for bountiful harvests – lots of sunshine followed by lots of rain, followed by more sun. These plums will soon be ready for making jams and chutneys!
Hessonite Garnet and Yellow Zircon Ring – Hessonite Garnets have that gorgeous peachy tone that is hard to resist.
This peach Moonstone pretty much sums up the image above!
This Triple Garnet 18k Gold ring has the deep reds of summer berries.
When it all comes together!

We hope you all manage to get some precious time out doors and enjoy the flavours, colours and shapes of the season. Some of the rings we have shared with you here are still available, others can be made to order. Have a look in the Webshop to see what other pieces catch your eye! As ever Disa is able to discuss any ideas you may have about commissioning a one off piece, just contact her by emailing disa.allsopp@gmail.com.

Goodbye for now from Disa and her team, and a woof from Molo!

This Autumn Goldsmiths’ Fair goes digital! Disa has been honoured to have been a regular exhibitor at Goldsmiths’ Fair for the past few years. One of the highlights of the UK Jewellery industry’s calender, Goldsmiths’ Fair has been welcoming collectors of fine jewellery through it’s doors since 1982. This year will see the launch of it’s online platform to support business recovery for sole traders and microbusinesses who are making and creating in the UK today.

It has never been a more important time to support our vibrant and creative industry and to promote the skills and techniques, handed down over centuries, of our maker community.

Richard Fox, Prime Warden (Chairman-equivalent) of the Goldsmiths’ Company, comments, ”At the Goldsmiths’ Company we are committed to supporting our craft and trade for the long term, as we have done for the last seven centuries through some of the worst crises in our history.”

And 2020 is no different as the Goldsmiths’ Company will be representing 130 designer makers based in the UK.

Double Cornflower Sapphire Ring

Harriet Scott, Head of Events at the Goldsmiths’ Company who curates and manages the Fair, says: “Our exhibitors are a selection of the best fine jewellers and contemporary silversmiths creating and making in the UK today. We will be supporting our maker community through their own digital journey and helping to future-proof their businesses during a period when the industry needs our backing more than ever. Creativity will always be one of the most powerful and inspirational responses to a crisis and this will be reflected in the unique, contemporary handcrafted jewellery and silver that will be available exclusively to visitors to the online Fair this September.”

Disa is looking forward to sharing her new work with you through Goldsmiths’ Fair Online – we will keep you posted via social media as things progress. The Fair will open its virtual doors from 24 September – 6 October 2020. Scapolite 18k Gold Ring

With so many of us having to change our holiday plans this summer we thought it would be nice to feature a few of Disa’s pieces that are inspired by her time in far off places.

As we dream of when we may once again find ourselves in exotic lands, these pieces may go some way to reminding us of happy experiences and give us hope for future adventures.

Disa Allsopp Spaghetti Rings – Inspired by the amazing food of Italy. The coils of wire instantly transport you to sitting in a little family run restaurant in the cobbled streets of Rome, or to a country villa, sipping cold white wine and catching the strands of spaghetti as you admire the vista! Browse the collection by clicking here or on the image of this warm 18k gold Spaghetti Ring.
Paraiba Tourmaline 18k Gold Ring – What could be more reminiscent of Caribbean seas than this stunning Paraiba tourmaline? It is even cut and faceted in to the shape of a water droplet! Add then the hammered texture 18k gold and you are walking barefoot on the warm sands of Barbados, listening to the waves and watching as the fishing boats come in. You can view this piece on request, just contact Disa through your prefered medium here.
Kenyan Aquamarine Textured 18k Gold Ring – Clear skies above you as you head off on safari in to the rugged landscape of East Africa! This Kenyan Aquamarine will transport you to the huge skies and expanses of land that go on as far as the eye can see. The rugged edge and deeply textured finish of the wide one-off band, with file marks and dips that remind you of the rough terrain and rocky rides through wildlife reserves. Look out for the lions! Available through the online shop here.
RGdNOEm010400M 18k gold textured ring with 4.4ct Emerald
4ct Emerald 18k Gold Ring – Exquisite Parisian chic encapsulated in a ring. This classically cut Emerald, the colour of swinging Paris in the Twenties, gives this ring an Art Deco feel that has us admiring it over our morning croissant et chocolat chaud. Timeless, Disa’s signature melted textural finish gives an Emerald 18k Gold ring a contemporary twist. Available via Whitebird Gallery, Paris.
Lemon Quartz 18k Gold Ring – The bright lights and busy streets of Manhattan, yellow taxis whizzing by, where if it’s bigger, it’s better. This cushion cut Lemon Quartz will flash far and wide enough to catch anyone’s eye. The narrow reticulated band makes this piece all about the whopper of a Lemon Quartz, just under 10 carats! And if you really want to go for more is more then stack it up with another huge gemstone, New York will love you! Available from Disa’s online shop now.

We hope you have enjoyed your travels with us today, and that for a little while you were transported to far off climes. Wishing you all good health and as always, do be in touch with any queries. Disa is available for commission work and we are posting out orders safely and securely for anyone ordering online. You can also now view all available pieces via the Instagram and Facebook pages, let us know where they take you!

Ciao!

Four weeks, give or take, since social distancing has been in place so we thought we would check in and let you know how things are going here at Disa Allsopp Ltd.

With her small team all working from home Disa has had the workshop to herself and has been designing for clients and testing out new ideas. Until a week ago she shared her outdoor space with a nesting Robin and three chicks! She has shared some beautiful pictures on Instagram. They have now flown the nest meaning Disa and Molo the Dalmation can again enjoy their garden in peace!

The team have been working on expanding Disa Allsopp’s online presence. We are excited to share with you the new shopping features on Disa’s Instagram and Facebook. This means it is easier to view the details of anything Disa shares with you on social media. Just tap on the image and you will be taken to the product page.

On this lovely Spring day we wish all of you good health and hope you are finding ways to enjoy the simple things during this difficult time. Thank you to all our clients and followers, we really appreciate your ongoing support!

We are busily preparing for Disa’s exhibition in August with Melee the Show, her second appearance at this glamorous trade-only show. Held at the Highline Hotel in buzzy Chelsea, New York, it is a must for anyone looking to find unique high end jewellery from independent makers.

Disa is working on luxurious gold necklaces and earrings to add to her collection, as well as building up her gemstone ring selection. The gemstone 18k gold rings are a favourite for collectors of Disa’s work so she is constantly on the look out for interesting colours and cuts. After her event two weeks ago for London Craft Week with Joanna Hardy & Goldsmiths’ Fair (see the last blog post), Disa was even more keen to source some lovely precious and semi precious stones. She is looking forward to sharing these new pieces with the top buyers in New York in August.

To visit the show you must be connected to the Jewellery and Fashion industries. The show runs from 10th -12th August 2019 and you can register to attend here: Melee The Show Registration

Hope to see you there and a happy Bank Holiday to the UK readers!

Disa is looking forward to taking part in an exciting event next week as part of London Craft Week 2019. Home House and Goldsmiths’ Fair present jewellery expert Joanna Hardy in conversation with Disa Allsopp and Julia Lloyd George.

Joanna Hardy will share her insights gleaned from working with the world’s most distinguished gemologists and creative jewellers. Joanna will interview Disa and Julia, jewellers known for their use of coloured gemstones. Both Disa and Julia have developed signature styles that feature gemstones, yet in completely different ways. Joanna explores their unique approach to gemstones, their inspiration and experience in what promises to be a lively discussion sparkling with insights. Followed by a fine jewellery handling session.

For more information about booking your space on the event please visit the London Craft Week event page.

We have begun adding some stunning new rings to Disa’s online shop. With the Spaghetti rings doing so well Disa thought it about time to add the fresh gemstone 18k gold rings to the Shop too!

They differ to the Spaghetti rings in that the gemstone rings are one off pieces so once they are gone they are gone! Disa can resize to your specifications so when ordering, select your finger size and she will do the rest.

Pictured is a stunning blue tourmaline baguette, 18k gold organic texture ring. The baguette cut is on trend and means you can look in to the stone and see all its unique inclusions that make it a one off piece. Disa’s signature melted, organic texture creates a warm contrast of colour and adds tactility.

Any questions do get in touch by emailing disa.allsopp@gmail.com or through the Contact page.

Disa Allsopp has always travelled a lot, growing up in Barbados with adventurous parents. She visits Kenya on a regular basis as inspiration and sourcing expeditions. This winter she visited one of her suppliers with direct links to the mine where this cabouchon ruby was discovered and cut.

This deep pink ruby is set simply in an 18k yellow gold rub-over setting with an open back to allow as much light play as possible. Poised on one of Disa’s signature organic texture bands this ring is all about show casing this unique stone in all its glory.

Enjoy the warmth and depth of colour as we head in to this fresh March weekend! To find out more about it email disa.allsopp@gmail.com or get in touch through the contact page.
